Restoring and Reforming the Formal Garden

Back to News

Almost a century after Natalie Bayard Brown first wandered along the bluestone pathways of her beloved Formal Garden at Harbour Court, the harsh New England weather had taken its toll: the paths, steps and fieldstone walls were crumbling.

Enter an inspired team comprised of Harbour Court staff, local masons from Aquidneck Island; and a grant from the New York Yacht Club Foundation.

Adding significant drainage to prevent future deterioration, and utilizing much of the original materials—including antique bluestone once used as ballast in sailing ships—the engineers and artisans reassembled and rebuilt the Formal Garden to better-than-new condition. It served as a welcome respite for socially spaced gatherings in the pandemic summer of 2020…and beyond.

Project Completion Date: 2019
